# Weak Engraving on Metal

## If your Edge Fiber Laser is engraving but the mark appears faint or shallow, the issue is typically related to laser settings, focus, or lens selection. Proper power density is critical for engraving metals effectively.

Symptoms

• Engraving appears very light  
• Multiple passes are required for shallow marks  
• Engraving disappears after cleaning

Possible Causes

• Laser out of focus  
• Speed too high  
• Frequency too high  
• Incorrect lens installed  
• Surface coating interfering with engraving

Diagnostics

Step 1 — Verify Focus  
Ensure the laser is focused properly for the installed lens.

Step 2 — Reduce Speed  
Lower engraving speed to increase energy delivered to the material.

Step 3 — Adjust Frequency  
Most metals engrave well between 30–60 kHz.

Step 4 — Check Lens Selection  
The 110 mm lens produces higher power density than the 220 mm lens.
