# Edge Fiber Laser Output Fades During a Job

If your Edge fiber laser starts a job strong but the mark gets lighter and lighter as the job runs, with barely any reaction or sound by the end of the pass, don't assume the laser source is dying. In most cases the cause is much simpler. Work through the steps below in order.

### Symptoms

- The first part of the engraving looks normal, then the mark gets progressively lighter.
- The laser reaction (bright white/blue flash and sizzling sound) gets weaker over the job.
- By the end of the pass there is little or no visible reaction.

### Step 1: Clean the lens (don't just look at it)

A lens that "looks fine" can still have a film of smoke, dust or residue that absorbs laser energy. Give it a real cleaning:

1. Turn the laser off.
2. Clean the lens with 70% or higher isopropyl alcohol and a microfiber cloth (preferred) or cotton swabs.
3. Let it dry completely, then run your job again.

In a recent customer case, cleaning the lens brought an Edge 50 right back to normal output.

While you're at it, use a gentle can of compressed air to clear dust from the laser's fans and filters.

### Step 2: Check your focus

After cleaning, confirm you're still at your optimal focus distance for the lens you have installed. See [Edge Fiber Laser Not Marking](https://support.salasers.com/edge-fiber-laser-not-marking-?hsLang=en) and [Weak Engraving on Metal](https://support.salasers.com/edge-fiber-laser-not-marking-0?hsLang=en) for focus and settings checks.

### Step 3: If it continues, clean and inspect the mirrors

If the output still fades after a clean lens, the mirrors are next. Contact SA Laser support before you open anything up so a technician can walk you through cleaning and inspecting the mirrors on your machine.

### Step 4: If it still continues, test the 24V power supply

If fading continues after the lens and mirrors are clean, the next check is the machine's 24V power supply for voltage fluctuations. Contact SA Laser support and we'll walk you through testing it.

### Contact support

Call 888-964-3568 or email customerservice@salasers.com (Mon–Fri, 9–5 CT). Please have your machine's serial number ready and, if you can, a short video of the job showing the output fading.
