How to Use the Circular Array Tool
-
Select Objects:
Highlight the object(s) you want to duplicate. -
Open the Circular Array Window:
Navigate to Arrange → Circular Array or click the Circular Array button in the Modifiers Toolbar. -
Set Array Parameters:
- Copies: Enter the number of duplicates to include in the array.
- Center of Rotation: Choose the rotation center:
- Enter X and Y coordinates.
- Use the position of the last selected object.
- Start and End: Define the array’s rotation range (e.g., partial or full 360°).
- Step: Set the angle between copies; it adjusts based on the Start, End, and Copies values.
-
Adjust Copy Rotation:
Enable Rotate Object Copies to align duplicates radially (e.g., tick marks on a stopwatch) or disable it to keep them upright (e.g., clock numerals). -
Finalize the Array:
- Group Results: Automatically group all objects in the array.
- Select Results: Keep the array selected upon creation for further adjustments.
- OK or Cancel: Confirm or discard the array.
Key Features and Applications
Organic Radial Patterns
Duplicate simple shapes to create intricate mandalas, flowers, or decorative frames.
Geometric Designs
Design starbursts, cogs, or radiating patterns with precise control over spacing and alignment.
Practical Applications
- Evenly distribute clock numerals or tick marks.
- Arrange mounting holes in a circular formation.
- Design round borders for plaques or decorative pieces.
Advanced Features
Auto-Increment Variable Text
- Increment text values for each duplicate using Variable Text.
- Adjust offsets to output unique data across the array (e.g., numbering clock positions).
Tips for Effective Use
- Custom Rotation Center: Use the last selected object as a reference for creative designs.
- Partial Arrays: Adjust Start and End fields to create arcs or semi-circles instead of full circles.
- Combine with Other Tools: Pair with the Grid Array tool for complex layouts.
Troubleshooting
Issue: Array isn’t forming as expected.
Solutions:
- Ensure objects are selected before opening the Circular Array tool.
- Check center of rotation coordinates or enable the "Use last selected object" option.
- Verify Start, End, and Step values for alignment.
By mastering the Circular Array tool, you’ll unlock the ability to create stunning radial patterns, decorative elements, and practical circular layouts with precision and creativity.
