Using the Nest Selected Feature in LightBurn

Optimize Material Usage with Efficient Graphic Arrangement

QuickRef-NestSelected

What is Nest Selected?

Nesting is a method of arranging objects to maximize material usage. LightBurn allows you to use the Nest Selected feature to export selected graphics, nest them using SVGnest.com, and re-import the optimized layout for cutting.

Location of Nest Selected Tools

  • Arrange Menu: Arrange → Nest Selected.

How to Use the Nest Selected Feature

  1. Prepare Graphics:

    • Select the graphics you want to nest.
    • Include a container graphic (a shape with dimensions matching your material).

Important: Ensure all graphics to be nested are outside the container graphic. LightBurn does not export interior shapes to maintain relative positioning during nesting.

  2. Export to SVGnest:

    • Go to Arrange → Nest Selected.
      Ref-NestSelected-InMenu
    • A dialog box will appear in LightBurn with the exported SVG file name (LightBurnNest.svg) and its file path copied to your clipboard.
      Ref-NestSelected-Popup
    • Your default web browser will open to SVGnest.com automatically.
  3. Nest Graphics in SVGnest:

    • Click Upload SVG on SVGnest.com.
    • Paste the file name into your browser’s file dialog or navigate to the saved SVG file.
    • Select the container shape, then click Start Nest.
    • When satisfied with the nested arrangement, click Stop Nest and download the nested SVG.
  4. Re-import into LightBurn:

    • Back in LightBurn, click OK in the dialog box.
    • Use the file browser to locate the downloaded SVG from SVGnest.
    • Import the nested SVG into LightBurn.

Key Notes

  • Automatic File Management: LightBurn automatically deletes the LightBurnNest.svg file it created once you import the new file from SVGnest.
  • Browser Requirement: The nesting process relies on SVGnest.com, which requires an internet connection and a browser to use.

Tips for Effective Nesting

  • Use a container graphic that accurately reflects your material's dimensions to ensure precise nesting.
  • Double-check that all objects are outside the container shape before exporting to avoid errors.
  • Experiment with SVGnest’s settings for optimal results, such as adjusting spacing or rotation.

The Nest Selected feature, combined with SVGnest.com, is a powerful way to minimize material waste and enhance the efficiency of your laser cutting projects.
