Introduction
Today we will learn how to trace images and adjust trace settings using LightBurn. This feature allows you to convert bitmap images into editable vector graphics. Let's get started.
Step-by-Step Guide
Step 1: Import the Image
Click on File in the top menu and select Import to browse for the image you want to trace. Locate and select the image file from your computer, then click Open to import it into LightBurn.
Step 2: Trace the Image
With the imported image selected, right-click the image and choose the Trace Image option or press the shortcut Alt + T. The Trace Image dialog box will appear.
Step 3: Adjust Trace Settings
In the Trace Image dialog box, adjust various settings to control the tracing process. Use the Cutoff and Threshold sliders to define the range of brightness values for tracing. Adjust the Ignore Less Than, Smoothness, and Optimize parameters to fine-tune the tracing result.
Step 4: Preview the Traced Image
Click the Fade Image button in the Trace Image dialog box to dim the original image and see the traced vector more clearly. Zoom and pan within the preview window using the mouse wheel and mouse buttons.
Step 5: Apply the Trace
Once satisfied with the trace settings and preview, click the OK button in the Trace Image dialog box. LightBurn will generate vectors based on the traced image.
Step 6: View the Resulting Vectors
After the tracing process is complete, you will see the resulting vector overlaid on the original image. Further edit and customize the vectors using LightBurn's editing tools if needed.
Step 7: Inverting and Offsetting Vectors
To invert the vectors, select the vector image and click the Ungroup button, then deselect it by clicking off the image in the work area. Click on the outer boundary of the image and press Delete to invert the image.
To offset the vectors, ensure the vectorized image is selected, then click Offset Shapes on the toolbar. Click the outward direction option, choose your preferred corner style, click the outer shapes only, adjust the offset distance value as desired, and click OK.
